For the last few years, I’ve been searching around the Internet for mention of my last yacht ‘Narena’. Well I finally found her, alive and well in the Mediterranean.
This photo was taken in November 2008, at a marina on the island of Leros. She is currently owned by an Italian couple, Giorgio and Antonella. It’s extremely gratifying to see that some 14 years after being painted, she still has the original paint job, and from what I can see has not had any structural change.
In the early ‘90s I bought the steel hull, and had it fitted out by shipwright Greg Vining, at Eprapah Creek, Victoria Point. She was launched somewhere around 1995 and spent a couple of years around Brisbane and Moreton Bay, before going to Melbourne. I sold her in late 1998 to Bruce and Cheryle Matthews, who planned to sail around the world. The last I heard of Narena (until now) was a report that Narena had been involved in a pirate attack in the Gulf of Aden, on 9 March 2003. Read an account of that attack, here.
